TROPFEST is returning to New York this summer! Making the move from Manhattan to Brooklyn, the event will be hosted by acclaimed actor, producer, director, and screenwriter Liev Schreiber on Saturday, June 22nd in Prospect Park.
Brooklyn’s Borough President, Marty Markowitz said of Tropfest’s move to Brooklyn: “Brooklyn is home to more filmmakers per square inch than just about any place in the world. We’re very excited about hosting this fabulous free festival and look forward to Tropfest returning every year going forward.”
In 2012, Tropfest took New York by storm, with an approximately 10,000+ crowd packing Bryant Park for the festival’s debut. The event, which was hosted Hugh Jackman, featured a short film competition judged LIVE on the night by a panel of esteemed industry judges including Rose Byrne (X Men: First Class, 28 Weeks Later), Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Jennifer Westfeldt (Friends with Kids, Kissing Jessica Stein), producer Ted Hope (Dark Horse, 21 Grams, Adventureland), and renowned film critic and Associate Director of Programming at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Scott Foundas. The event also featured live musical performances by internationally renowned Alexi Murdoch, Doveman, and local Brooklyn indie-rockers Milagres.
Eight finalist films were screened – along with eight ‘Best Of Tropfest’ films – with First Prize being awarded to Josh Leake’s film “Emptys”. In winning Tropfest New York, not only did Josh get to serenade the crowd with Hugh Jackman, but he also took home The Motion Picture Association First Prize of $20,000 cash and a week of meetings with film producers, studio executives, agents, and managers designed to help propel their filmmaking career to new heights.
Back in 2013, Tropfest will again bring its unique blend of music, film, food and live entertainment to New York. As this year’s host Schreiber says: “Tropfest New York is an incredible opportunity for emerging filmmakers to have their work seen by a huge audience, along with a judging panel that shares their passion for film. I’m very pleased to host this year’s New York event, and to be part of bringing Tropfest across the bridge to Brooklyn.”
